The CPA collated figures from the first quarter of the year and surveyed its members to discover what they expect from the year ahead.
Their figures suggest that the beginning of the new year was tough throughout the sector, with 15% of heavy side firms reporting a quarter-on-quarter fall in sales, whilst sales hadn’t risen since the previous quarter for any of the light side firms surveyed. Poor weather conditions in February and March were mooted as the reason behind these results.
There are plenty of causes for optimism over the coming months, despite cost increases being reported across the sector (by 90% on the heavy side and 78% on the lighter side). Responses from the product manufacturing trade indicate that 37% of heavy side and 16% of light side representatives expect to see sales rise as the year progresses.
